Safer Roads for Users


The main objective is to eliminate border effect expressed with difference in road accident risks for road users in EU and RF sides of Barents Region.  Principles and instruments to manage accident risk for users are going to be harmonized. E.g. one ideal would be the harmonisastion of road conditions on both sides of the border. The project is also expected to improve the fluency of road transport flows. The project will reach its obectives by multi-sectoral cross-border cooperation.

CYAR – Children and Youth At Risk in the Barents region

The CYAR project aims at strengthening the public services in order to adequately assist and support children and youth at risk.  This will considerably improve their life conditions. Creating frameworks for exchange of information and experience between the partners, competence building in the collaborating regions will strengthen the public sector in the Barents region with responsibility for the well-being of youth and children. The project activities are aimed at reinforcement of parental resources, development of foster care services, social skill training for children and youth, prevention of juvenile delinquency, rehabilitation of minor offenders and monitoring of the rights of the child.

Food and health security in the Norwegian,Finnish and Russian border region: linking local industries, communities and social-economic impacts

Short title: Food and health security

 The objective of the project is to assess the impact of industrial pollution on food safety and human health in the populated Norwegian, Finnish, and Russian border region. The project will also get insight into people’s risk perception due to pollution of their local environment through interviews and questionnaires. The level of contamination in local food items (fish, game, berries etc.) important for local consumption will be determined. The data will be used to compare risk for population groups with potential different dietary pattern and exposure. This will provide a good base for local and cross-border strategies to reduce potential risks. Data on contaminant levels in local harvested food and in humans can be integrated with monitoring of key human health endpoints in future human risk assessments and food safety management. Assessment of results will be communicated to stakeholders within participating countries (i.e., general public, government, and industry)

Kolarctic Salmon (Trilateral cooperation on our common resource: the Atlantic salmon in the Barents region

Kolarctic Salmon is a project who aims at merging modern science with traditional salmon fishing knowledge to create a future sustainable, long-term and knowledge-based salmon management of the common Atlantic salmon stocks in the Barents region. 

The project´s area reaches from the Norwegian Nordland county in the west to the Russian Pechora region in the east. A considerable part if the most important, still existing wild salmon stocks of the Atlantic, live on this area.

The project is essentially a research project, that utilizes the developed methods of DNA analysis. Using today´s methods it is possible to use salmon scale in DNA analysis and find out e.g. the home river or population group of the individual.

The project will produce e.g. a genetic map of the salmon stocks of the region, knowledge about the development of different salmon stocks and their migration patterns.

The abbreviation CEEPRA is of the project Collaboration Network on EuroArctic Environmental Radiation Protection and Research. Central radiation research institutions of the Euroarctic region participate in the project. It aims at improved emergency preparedness for radiation accidents. The project will increase knowledge on the current radiological situation, by studying environmental samples collected from the area. It will also study the long-term effects of radiation to different sources of livelihood on the area, such as reindeer husbandry, natural products and tourism. One of the project´s tasks is also to increase public knowledge on the current radiological situation and on radiation safety.

CETIA (Coastal Environment, Technology and Innovation in the Arctic)

Coastal environment, technology and innovation in the arctic - CETIA aims to contribute to develop new approaches to monitor the coastal environment and new technologies of bio-remediation. The project seeks at e.g. to find new, better methods for identifying the effects of certain pollutants. One goal is also – to express it generally – study some methods to prevent the harmful effects of some substances like oil spill. The project will produce academic knowledge, recommendations for the purposes of decision-making, and educational programs.

MineHealth - Sustainability of miners´well-geing, health and work ability in the Barents Region

The project will provide long term sustainability of well-being, health and work ability among workers in the mining industry on the Barents region.  Work in the mining industry situated in the Barents region is characterized by exposure to harsh climatic conditions. Therefore specific knowledge is needed about the separate and combined risks that are unique for the regional mining industry. The project will increase this knowledge. It will also work on various measures of protection against the harmful conditions of the work on arctic mines.

While new mines will be put into operation, active deposits are scheduled for closure. The challenges of the mine closure will arise; closed mines may have a negative impact on surrounding water, soil and air. This can be prevented by good planning, and therefore information about the surroundings of the mine in question is needed.

The project will develop innovative methodology concerning environmentally safe mine closure
under specific conditions of Barents area. This will be done in cooperation between mining and environment expert from three countries.  The project has three case mines from Sweden, Finland and Russia.

ABCGheritage - Arctic Biological, Cultural and Geological heritage

The objective of the project is to raise awareness of the protected areas and recreational areas on the region known as the Green Balt of Fennoscandia. The areas offer potential in many ways. There is, e.g. a growing interest on geology, growing interest on and knowledge of sustainable utilization of natural resources in tourism, and these possibilities have not yet been utilized. Especially they are not yet utilized among the young people, schoolchildren and schools, which are a central target group of this project.

Trilateral cooperation on Environmental Challenges in the Joint Border Area (TEC)

Assessment tools for detecting the effects of harmful substances, water regulation and climate change will be developed in the Finnish, Norwegian and Russian border region within the project.

The aim of the project is to develop tools used by environmental authorities and researchers when assessing the impacts of airborne emissions, regulation of waterways and climate change on the environment. These tools are assessment systems, based on environmental monitoring and research of meteorological, hydrological and ecological models.

ArctiChildren InNet (2012-2014) - Empowering School e-Health Model in the Barents Region

The health and well-being of children and youth on the region is challenged in many ways. Some of these are common for the region, and some are also in connection to the regions´s special features such as sparse population and limited availability of services.

Youths' traditional sources of health information are no longer satisfying their needs, and they are increasingly using the internet for health-related information. Children and youth are also early adopters of new technologies. These are reasons why e-health services is seen as a positive possibility of improving the health services of children and youth on the Kolarctic region.

The project will involve different groups in the mapping of the needs and planning of the services. Pilot schools (schoolchildren, parents, school-, social- and health care experts) are involved for mapping their attitudes, needs and wishes to develop health promotion through ICT. Also university students will be integrated in this process acquiring new knowledge.

The Barents Freeway

The project will integrate current transport strategies, plans and projects of each participating country into a common Barents Region Transport Strategy. The project will e.g. carry out case studies of Road, Air, Rail and Sea and Waterway transports, which result to a package of proposals to improve road, flight, rail and waterway connections as well as port systems. Another example of the project activities is introduction of the Barents Region Transport Strategy to be a multi-component synthesis of national, cal and modal interests and implementation of a model of equipment procurement.

Enhancement of Oil Spill Response System by Establishing Oil Database

The specific objective of the project is to generate a mechanism of effective coordination between international response forces in case of emergency spills of Russian oil in the waters of northern seas. The mechanism will take into account the forecast of oil behavior on the basis of laboratory studies.
